I found out about this movie after watching a Starz TV special about Comic-to-Film movies. It is based on a Crumb character named "Fritz the Cat". The movie itself is a raunchy look at the archetypes of the 1960's. The plot revolves around a college student who goes out looking for himself in all the wrong places. As a result he finds himself in a sea of drugs, orgies, and violence. Ultimately, however, he learns nothing. As a commentary, I think it is a wonderful satire. While I wasn't alive during the 60's, I still got a lot out of the movie. According to it, the decade was time for self exploration that usually ended with either failure and redemption, or failure and revenge. Made in 1972, the film comes right off the tail end of the decade, and as a result is an immediate reaction to the changing times. It speaks to the revolution of the 70's as a pull away from the 60's and its self destructive but socially powerful time.
In summary, it is a good film. For an X-rated film, I thought it could of gotten away with an R-rating. Over the years many of the commentary still speaks true into today. The only downside is the film is blatantly not sensitive to racial issues. Rather than treat race as a social problem, it treats it as a physical and cultural one. Race doesn't exits! We're all humans! But the film makes it clear that there is a distinct black-or-white culture. But perhaps this is a subtle part of the satire of the film.
All in all: Find it and Rent it! It is a must see.
